FSA or HSA for Optometry
Eligible Health Savings Account Reimbursements
Use your annual FSA or HSA benefits to cover eye exams and corrective vision eyewear. Eye Wares can help at all locations.
Optical Reimbursements
Unfortunately, not all insurance coverage includes vision care or completely covers optometry and optical needs. However, one way to still reduce the cost associated with ocular treatment is to make use of an FSA or HSA account.
FSA (Flexible Spending Account) is a type of account given by employers so employees can regularly deposit pre-taxed money for medical use. On the other hand, HSA (Health Savings Account) functions the same way as an FSA. The difference, however, is that HSAs are managed by individuals, unlike FSA –– managed by employers.
FSA or HSA for Eyewear
Here at Eye Wares, you can use an FSA or HSA to cover the fees of prescription eyewear. Take note that this is only for prescription eyewear, as non-prescription ones aren’t classified as a medical expense. Essentially, any item that’s prescribed by our certified team of opticians or optometrists will be covered by either.
For your reference, here are the following types of eyewear that are covered by FSA or HSA:
- Prescription eyeglasses. This includes bifocals, reading glasses, and progressive multifocal.
- Prescription sunglasses
- Eyeglass frames without lenses
- Sports masks or safety goggles with prescription lenses
FSA or HSA for Contact Lenses
In addition to prescription eyeglasses, you can also use FSA or HSA to pay for prescription contact lenses. Take note that if you’re planning to use either as a form of reimbursement for prescription contact lenses, it’s best to opt for those that have polarized lenses, blue light filtering lenses, and anti-reflective coating. Still, discuss with your provider concerning what’s covered and what’s not.
FSA or HSA for Family Members
You can also use your FSA or HSA as a form of funding to buy prescription glasses or contact lenses for your loved ones, like your spouse or children. This is particularly true for HSA funds, as the amount can be carried forward annually. Some may even accumulate the amount in preparation for a big expense. This makes it perfect for expensive eye surgeries or procedures.
Use FSA or HSA Benefits Before It Expires.
FSA benefits are funded throughout a calendar year. Usually, the plans require the funded amount be spent in that calendar year. Annually, the IRS determines how much can be rolled over to the next year. Many FSA account holders must find ways to spend the remainder of their benefit at the end of the year. It’s better to use it or lose it. Don’t let your FSA Benefits expire, stop by Eye Wares and order a year supply of contact lenses, or choose a beautiful frame or a pair of prescription sunglasses.
