What is Vision Insurance?

Eye Wares accept vision insurance. Vision care insurance usually covers any routine eye health expenses. This includes contact lens fittings, eye exams, as well as eyeglass lenses, and frame fitting. Some vision insurance plans may even offer a discount on LASIK procedures and other ocular corrective surgeries.

Take note that vision insurance will either completely cover the cost of the entire procedure mentioned above or it may ask the policyholder for a percentage fee to cover a portion of the expense with the insurance provider.

What Does Vision Insurance Benefits Cover?

Vision insurance providers, depending on the company, have different coverage. The coverage is usually categorized as standard, basic, enhanced, and advanced. The premium that the policyholder pays will determine the type of coverage.

At an optometry practice, generally vision insurance will cover with or without a copay: the eye exam, contact lens fitting coverage, contact lenses or eyeglass frames and eyeglass lenses.

Learn More About Vision Insurance Coverage

Eye Exam Coverage

The insured is granted one comprehensive vision exam annually. Some companies will ask the policyholder to co-pay around $10 to $20.

Contact Lens Fitting Coverage

Some plans will cover a Contact Lens Fitting, which is different than a comprehensive eye exam. If you wear or want to wear contacts, you will need an additional exam to properly fit your contact lens prescription. Learn more about Contact Lens Fittings.

Eyeglass Frames or Contact Lens Coverage

Most insurance providers will consider this benefit as an allowance. So, depending on your coverage level, you may receive $130 to $150 for eyeglass frames or contact lenses annually. You can select a frame or contact lenses equal to or less than your benefit or put the benefit dollars toward a more expensive item. Please note that if you choose to use your benefits to purchase contacts over frames, it is medically required to have a pair of eyeglasses in your current prescription in case you cannot wear your contacts.

Eyeglass Lenses Coverage

Lenses are usually treated separately from the frames benefit. Typically, most insurances will cover eyeglass lenses with a co-pay, amounting to $20 to $30 annually. Eye Wares offers a variety of high quality lenses.

What Does Medical Insurance Cover at an Optometry Practice?

Depending on your coverage, medical insurance may also be used to cover certain expenses at an optometry practice. Medical insurance benefits usually cover medically necessary diagnosis or treatments. If you have eye disease, certain eye conditions or an eye injury, most medical insurances will cover a portion of the expense. This may include comprehensive eye exams with dilation, but not refraction, eye infection, diabetes eye exam, macular degeneration, cataract monitoring, or glaucoma. Use Vision Insurance Benefits Before It Expires

Vision Insurance benefits typically expire at the end of a calendar year. Not using your vision insurance is leaving money on the table. If you want your hard work to pay off, then consider using your Vision Insurance at Eye Wares! Since most coverage is annual, make sure to have your eyes checked at least once a year.
