At Eye Wares, we are always looking for ways to make life easier for our patients. The days of sacrificing your whole day for an eye exam, and patiently waiting for the dilation effects to fade, are over. Optomap is a non-dilating, non-invasive procedure that takes less time than the blink of an eye! It is the most comprehensive option for eye exams and can capture over 80% of your eye in one savable snapshot. This enables Optomap to track a patient’s vision as well as assess the eye for possible signs of damage and disease. Learn more about why Optomap is at the forefront of the optometry industry and is our number one choice for eye exams.

What is the Difference Between Optomap and Dilation?

A comprehensive eye exam is designed to assess a patient’s vision and overall eye health. In the past, dilation was the more traditional method to examine the eye. Like the medical industry, instruments, techniques, and technology evolve to accommodate new information. What exactly is the difference between these two eye exams?

·         Dilation. Dilation is the more traditional method for eye exams. The optometrist applies eye drops to enlarge the pupil area, allowing more light to enter so the doctor can better observe the back of the patient’s eye. The drops take approximately a half-hour to take effect, and the blurred vision they cause can last anywhere between 4 and 6 hours.

·         Optomap. Optomap is a painless, quick, non-invasive snapshot of your eye that allows doctors to examine the majority of the retina. While dilation is not usually necessary with Optomap, it may depend on the patient’s vision and eye health. In a single quarter of a second snapshot, the optometrist can capture a high-resolution image of the retina. The image is then immediately available for review and can be saved to compare against past screenings.

What are the Main Advantages of an Optomap Retinal Screening?

Besides the obvious “quick, advanced technology” benefits, Optomap retinal imaging has many advantages over traditional retinal exams, such as dilation.

  1. Safe. Optomap is a safe, touch-free procedure, making it the most sanitary option for your next eye exam. Because doctors prefer not to dilate pregnant women, Optomap is the number one choice for optometrists while performing an eye exam on expectant mothers.
  2. Comfortable. The procedure is quick, painless, and comfortable. This is why patients of all ages are comfortable getting their eye exams at Eye Wares. The process of capturing an image of the patient’s retina takes less than a second.
  3. Comprehensive. Optomap is the most advanced retinal imaging tool on the market. It provides your optometrist an 82% view of your retina and can even enlarge specific areas and generate side-by-side comparisons to past images.
  4. Eye Disease Prevention. Optomap’s capabilities include the ability to detect developmental eye issues, as well as diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and more!
  5. Track Your Eye Health. The sooner you undergo retinal imaging, the sooner you can start tracking your eye health. Your optometrist can evaluate images of your retina and track development over time. The image can also be shared to your personal device, so you can keep each image for your records.
