Common misconceptions about a contact lens is that they are inherently considered medically necessary because they are prescribed to improve eyesight. Truthfully, medically necessary contacts are non-elective contact lenses that are prescribed when eye patients are unable to achieve the desired level of visual acuity through traditional eyeglasses because of the existence of another condition. Examples of conditions for which medically necessary contact lenses may be prescribed are the following:

• A condition in which the front surface of the eye or lens is curved in a way that can cause blurred vision.
• This condition occurs when your eyes have different or varying refractive powers (prescriptions), causing an unequal focus between the two eyes.
• Keratoconus is a rare progressive eye disease in which the clear tissue of the cornea bulges into a cone-shape, causing blurred and often distorted vision.

Soft contact lenses are the best option for comfort and breathability. These lenses are made from thin, lightweight materials like silica hydrogels. Its slim build allows oxygen to pass through the lenses and reach the cornea with ease. This prevents the eyes from frequently drying out while using the contact lenses. It also ensures that your eyes will feel comfortable, even after long hours of use.

Rigid contact lenses are primarily made to provide clear and crisp vision. It can also be used to help individuals that are suffering from refractive errors, such as astigmatism, nearsightedness, farsightedness, and presbyopia. These lenses are durable, built to last, and can typically be used for about 2 to 3 years on average. Its long life can minimize costs and offer great value for money. These contact lenses are less likely to tear or fall off while in use.

Disposable contact lenses are single-use lenses that are made to be discarded and replaced with a new pair on the following day. Many individuals choose to go with disposable lenses because it offers more comfort and convenience in some cases. Replacing your contact lenses at the end of each day keeps you safe from the buildup of substances like protein, lipids, and calcium so you can enjoy safe and 100% clean lenses every single day.

Scleral lenses are a variety of medically necessary contact lenses that can be prescribed to accommodate eyes with conditions such as severe astigmatism and Keratoconus. If you have either of these conditions and have ever been told that your eyes are not suited for contact lenses, it is advisable to ask your eye doctors about scleral lenses. Scleral contacts are designed to “smooth” out corneas with an irregular surface in order to correct vision problems. Instead of covering a small portion of the cornea, these large-diameter lenses cover the entire corneal surface, all the way out to the sclera (the white) of the eye.

Because of their unique shape and size, scleral lenses are more stable and durable than conventional GP lenses. They are easier to handle and pose less risk for complications. Ask your eye doctor about how scleral lenses can accommodate irregularly shaped corneas to give you sharper, clearer vision.
